Best views of Berlin

When you’re in Berlin, you’ll want to see panoramic views of the city, especially at night. So I’ve compiled a list of places to go for the best views of Berlin.

Spoiler alert: the TV Tower is not on my list because when you’re in the TV Tower (the most recognizable part of Berlin’s skyline), then the TV Tower isn’t in any of your pictures. This is why I’ve ranked all of these other places above the TV Tower.

Here’s where to go for the best views of Berlin!

Kollhoff Tower best views of Berlin

Kollhoff Tower

The Kollhoff Tower is on the northern edge of Potsdamer Platz. From its observation deck, you can see the TV Tower, Reichstag, and the Balloon going up and down. The views here are the best in the evening and at night.

Lines to the Kollhoff Tower observation deck (called the Panoramapunkt) are relatively short, even during peak tourist seasons, because this is a lesser-known spot. However, you want to give yourself plenty of time to arrive at the building and take the elevator up while it’s still light so you can watch the sunset.

You can find the opening and closing times here. The last entry to the observation deck is 30 minutes before closing time, and you can buy skip-the-line tickets ahead of time here.

Fun fact: the Kollhoff Tower has Europe’s fastest elevator. It only takes you 20 seconds to get to the 24th floor where the observation deck is!

Victory Column best views of Berlin

    Victory Column

Also called Siegessäule, the Victory Column is the famous column in the middle of the Großer Stern roundabout. The Column’s viewing platform gives you beautiful and unobstructed views of the Berlin skyline.

The Column and main roads are also in the middle of the Tiergarten, a large park. So the views from here are unique because there’s so much green visible with the cityscape.

To get to the viewing platform, you have to climb 285 steep and narrow steps. There are a few small landings for catching your breath, but this is a tough climb. The views are well worth it, but you need to plan on it taking at least an hour and a half to go up, take in the views, and descend.

Entry to the viewing platform costs €3, or €2,5 for students, and you can find the opening and closing times here. There’s a pedestrian underpass to reach the column, so don’t attempt to cross the roundabout.

Park Inn by Radisson Berlin Alexanderplatz Hotel

Park Inn by Radisson Berlin Alexanderplatz Hotel

To get this view, you need to visit the rooftop terrace on the 40th floor of the Park Inn by Radisson Berlin Alexanderplatz Hotel. For non-hotel guests, it costs €4 per person to access the rooftop terrace, and you’ll need to order at least one drink per person.

From here, you’ll have amazingly close views of the TV Tower. If the weather is warm, then you can bring your swimsuit to swim in the rooftop pool.

You can also base fly off this building. Base flying is a controlled free-fall where you’re secured by a special winch rappel system. This activity is only available certain times of the year, and the night jumps are some of the most popular. You can find more information on base flying here.

    Reichstag best views of Berlin

    Reichstag

The dome of the Reichstag doubles as a stellar viewpoint and an incredible work of art. To get to the dome, you’ll enter the building through the west portal and take an elevator to the roof terrace. Then from the roof terrace, you’ll walk up a ramp into the dome, and then you can walk up more ramps along the edge of the dome to reach the upper viewing platform.

But the views below the dome can be as fascinating as the views above. The dome looks down on the German parliament chamber, symbolizing that the people are above the government.

The Reichstag dome is open from 8:00 am to midnight daily, and the last entry is at 9:45 pm. You need to register in advance to visit the dome at a designated time. So, a visit to the dome needs to be pre-planned in your itinerary. You can book here in advance.

There is also a restaurant in the dome. The dome is closed on most holidays and for regular work and refurbishment. You can view scheduled closure dates here.

    Teufelsberg best views of Berlin

    Teufelsberg

    Teufelsberg

As you can see in the picture above, this is not a traditional cityscape viewpoint. Teufelsberg is a human-made hill in what used to be West Berlin in the north of Berlin’s Grunewald Forest. It’s about a 20-minute car ride from the center of Berlin.

Teufelsberg is also called ‘Devils Mountain,’ and it’s constructed out of debris from World War II. It was a listening post during the Cold War, and now it’s a popular tourist site.

To get here, you’ll have to hike up a relatively steep incline through the woods. From Berlin, it takes about an hour to reach Teufelsberg by public transportation, or you can do a guided tour that includes transportation.
