March is a transition month for most countries. This means temperatures will be milder, landscapes will be transforming, and some of the world’s best festivals will be in full swing.
This is a perfect travel month because you have so many destination options. You can still find some Winter weather, or you can head to a warm tropical beach.
So here are the best destinations to visit in March!
You’ll want The Luck of the Irish this month! You can’t have a list of must-visit destinations in March without including Ireland.
The landscape will be returning to its lush green as Spring takes over the country. And St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland is CRAZY, but it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience you won’t want to miss.
The St. Patrick’s celebrations overtake the entire country, especially in Dublin, where you can experience the full-out parties in pub after pub. Just make sure you bring plenty of green clothes with you!
March is Japan’s peak season, but it’s still worth visiting. This month has the best weather all year with a low chance of rain and long sunny days. Temperatures are still chilly with highs in the mid-50s°F and lows in the 40s°F (5-13°C), so make sure you bring layers.
This is the prime month for cherry blossoms. Seeing Japan’s iconic cherry blossom trees in full bloom is a must-do experience.
You can also hit the slopes in higher altitudes because this is the end of the ski season. For those of you who like to dive, you can see humpbacks and manta rays before they migrate away in April.
This is the shoulder season in Egypt. Crowds will be fewer, days are longer, prices will be lower, and temperatures will be cooler, which means visiting the famous ancient sites will be much more enjoyable.
The blue skies and sunny weather are perfect for a cruise on the Nile or for lounging on a beach. In March, you’ll actually be able to get a lounge chair on the beach or by the pool because of smaller crowds.
Water temperatures are warm this time of year, so you can enjoy swimming, snorkeling, sea kayaking, and diving without competing with masses of other people.
March is one of the most popular months to visit any part of India. The weather is at its best, and this is when Holi takes place.
Holi is the festival of color. You’ll spend several days throwing colorful powder and paint on yourself, others, and the streets. This is the most incredible and singularly beautiful celebration I’ve ever experienced
Pro Tip: the dyed powder and water won’t come out of clothes. So only wear clothes outside that you’re okay being permanently rainbow-colored.
March has perfect weather in Mexico. This is one of the driest months of the year, so you’ve got the best chance of sunny days. But temperatures are still only in the mid-80’s°F (around 30°C), so it won’t be uncomfortably hot yet.
This is the end of the dry season, so tourist numbers and prices will be less as long as you avoid Easter (if it’s early). The end of March is a big Spring Break time, so visiting earlier in the month will increase your chances of lower costs and fewer tourists.
On Mexico’s West coast, March is the end of the whale-watching season. So you should still be able to see humpbacks this time of year.
Spring is the perfect time to visit the Himalayas because the weather is warm but not humid, and the wildflowers will be in full bloom.
There’s a low chance of rain, so the weather will be bright and sunny. That means this month has perfect trekking conditions for taking in the incredible views.
Most people think when you visit Nepal, you have to hike Everest, but there are excellent hikes through lowland villages and glacier lakes for less-extreme hikers.
For Chile, March is the transition month from Summer to Autumn. Crowds will be thinning, the weather will be drier, prices will be dropping, and the foliage will be changing.
This is a great time to visit Patagonia because many parts of it are inaccessible in the Winter, and crowds and prices are at their peak in Summer. March is also a great time to visit Easter Island after the tourism peak in February.
March is grape harvest season. So if you’re in one of the wine regions, make sure you experience one of the Fiesta de la Vendimia wine festivals that will be taking place all month. This month is also when Lollapalooza Chile happens in Santiago.
Key West, Florida, U.S.
If you want lots of sun, temperatures that aren’t too hot, and a beach destination that’s rarely affected by the Spring Break madness, then Key West is for you.
This island city is the southernmost point of the Continental United States, so it makes for a great starting point if you want to explore more of the Caribbean.
When you’re here, you’ll want to take a day trip sailing and snorkeling through the Keys, tour the Audubon House and Tropical Gardens, visit Dry Tortugas National park, and drive on the Overseas Highway.
March is a perfect month to visit Jordan because the temperatures are cool enough that you won’t melt but warm enough that you can camp out in Wadi Rum. Tourist numbers and travel costs will also be less in March.
This is the end of the rainy season, so the landscape will be lush, waterfalls will be rushing, and the olive and almond trees will be in bloom.
In March, you actually have a chance at taking pictures at Petra without lots of other people in your shots.
March has some of the driest and sunniest weather of the year, so this is the perfect time to visit Vietnam! This is also the shoulder season, so prices and tourist numbers will be relatively low.
The weather during March is the least-humid all year, so this month is perfect for lounging on the southern beaches or trekking through the Northern mountains.
If you’re in the Khoai Chau district, make sure you don’t miss the Chu Dong Tu festival that takes place in March. The holiday is celebrated with processions of golden dragons and burning incense.
